CHAPTER SIX
The following Wednesday, Zach had several client meeting in Billings in the morning and then met his executive assistant, Ashley, at noon at The Carlyle for lunch. The Carlyle was a bit extravagant, but Zach didn't mind. Ashley deserved it. She really did an amazing job for him and all of his clients loved her. His business hadn't missed a beat since he moved out to Beauville, and that was largely because of Ashley. They caught up on all pending business, and were on dessert when she reminded him of his two o'clock appointment, the one he was least looking forward to.
"I'm really sorry. She has just been hounding me to get on your schedule and it might just be easier for you to see her and set her straight." Ashley looked furious on his behalf. "She is still telling people you're engaged and wearing that ring!"
Zach sighed. "That might sort of be my fault," he admitted, and then went on to explain. "When I called off the engagement and and told Bethanne I was moving to Beauville for a yearâas you can imagine, she didn't take it very well."
"Well, she was planning the wedding of the year. She told me the reception was going to be here and she wanted everyone to know it."
"She never told me that, but it doesn't surprise me." He'd met Bethanne at a charity gala and he had been attracted to her right away. She was a very pretty girl, very polished, with pale, blonde hair that fell to her shoulders in a classic bob and there was never a hair out of place. She looked a little like Anna, he realized. The hair color was similar, anyway, but Bethanne was a size zero. He knew this because she told him, often, and was proud of it. He'd frequently thought she was too skinny, but he never told her that. Bethanne was impressed by things like that. She liked that he was a successful business owner and she made it clear that when she married, she expected to be a stay-at-home wife and mother. Zach didn't have a problem with that. He just wasn't sure that she was the one he wanted to stay home with forever.
He enjoyed dating her and they did have fun together, but every so often he'd get the feeling that something was missing. Especially when he found that when she wasn't around, he didn't miss her, and that didn't seem like a good thing. His biggest mistake was dating her as long as he did. They were together for four years, and when she started leaving pictures of rings around his apartment, he got the hint. Most of his friends were getting engaged and he and Bethanne had been together so long that it just seemed like the next step, what was expected. He was happy enough with her to do it, he told himself. But almost immediately after popping the question he regretted it, and the feeling grew over the next few months.
